Rodgers, Kern, Hammerstein, & Hart: American Masters Light Up Season Finale
It was a grand night for singing, Saturday, June 5, and the Duke Ellington Theatre in Georgetown reverberated with the sound of music as the Congressional Chorus and the American Youth Chorus concluded their 2009-10 season with a joint performance of choral works from American masters of the Broadway musical: Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rodgers, and Lorenz Hart. The concert was made possible through the generous financial support of Bob Lemon.
The choruses thrilled an audience of parents, friends, and Broadway-musical lovers with songs from our best-loved Broadway shows and Hollywood films, including State Fair, Showboat, South Pacific, The King & I, Carousel, Oklahoma!, and The Sound of Music. Well-known songs from lesser-known shows – “They Didn’t Believe Me,” “With a Song in My Heart,” “All the Things You Are” – demonstrated the staying power of these perennial favorites.

From Kari Doyle’s rollicking impersonation of Tina Turner singing “Proud Mary” to Bronson Lee’s evocative interpretation of “What a Wonderful World,” the third annual Congressional Chorus cabaret “Feelin’ Groovy” had audiences cheering at all three sold-out shows.
“The best evening out [I’ve] had in a long time,” said one member of the audience. “I’ve never had more fun,” said another. “And my guests were blown away.” The concert was “so uplifting, so full of energy – it was a complete joy!” said Jane Lang, Chair, Board of Directors, Atlas Performing Arts Center. “The feeling shared by audience and performers in the theatre was just as I had imagined ‘a night at the Atlas’ when I first envisioned the Center.”

Voices of the American Youth Chorus brightened a holiday reception on Dec. 15 when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton played host to Washington’s Diplomatic Corps. Two dozen members of the chorus’s Junior Division, ages 8-10, sang 90 minutes of Christmas carols and seasonal favorites in the State Department’s elegant Franklin Reception Room. After the event, Mrs. Clinton mingled with the students and posed with them for pictures.
